World Migratory Bird Day Festival
Ever seen a live hawk up close and personal? Or enjoyed doughnuts and coffee while getting great close-focus views of birds at a nearby feeder? Or taken part in an easy walk for beginning birders? These experiences will be on hand for the World Migratory Bird Day Festival at Sugarite Canyon State Park. A schedule of event times and locations will be available at the park Visitor Center, or call the park or details.

Sugarite Fishing Derby
The Sugarite Fishing Derby is a nine-day fishing extravaganza at Sugarite Canyon State Park! The derby starts at dawn on Saturday, May 30, and ends at noon on Sunday, June 7. Registered anglers fish at Lake Maloya for tagged trout, to get a chance at cash prizes up to $1,000. And every registered participant gets a chance at a 14-foot V-hull Lowe boat and trailer! Registration is $10 per person. There are daily door prizes, as well as a free Kids' Derby on Saturday, June 6, put on by the Raton Kiwanis club.

Sugarite Canyon
Kayak Tour
Join us for a Kayak Tour along Lake Maloya's water trail at Sugarite Canyon State Park. Park Superintendent Robert "Mac" McIvor will lead this adventure to celebrate National Trails Day. Participants must be at least 14 years old and bring their own kayak and Coast Guard-approved life jacket. All skill levels are welcome. After the tour, participants will gather at the park Visitor Center for a hamburger/hot dog lunch provided by the Friends of Sugarite. Down and Dirty Mountain Bike Race
Go for the glory in this tough, 15-mile mountain bike event at Sugarite Canyon State Park. This adventure race will include several trail challenges in the scenic mountains of northern New Mexico. Master of the Mountains
Challenge yourself in this fun, four-part adventure relay in the mountains of northern New Mexico. This annual event includes a 10K trail run, a 3-mile paddle course around Lake Maloya, a 20-mile bicycle route and a shotgun shoot. Much of the event takes place in Sugarite Canyon State Park. First Day Hike at Sugarite
A First Day Hike is a wonderful way to start the New Year! Join us at Sugarite Canyon State Park for great views of Lake Maloya on this easy-to-moderate, two-mile walk. This guided walk will start at the Lake Maloya Trailhead. We recommend you dress warmly and wear water-proof boots. Bring a hat, sunblock and water.
