State Park Restrictions


Cimarron Canyon and Morphy Lake are currently closed because of extreme fire danger until further notice.

Many of the State Parks are currently under Fire Restrictions. Please check the Park status before you go!


Bluewater Lake (505) 876-2391
STAGE II FIRE RESTRICTIONS: No fires or charcoal use allowed within the State Park. Smoking is allowed only in enclosed vehicles or building. Fireworks are always prohibited in the State Park. Contact park for more details. 4/24/2018 - ongoing

Due to extreme fire danger and closures of the Mount Taylor Ranger District of the Cibola National Forest, only Las Tusas Recreational Area, on the south side of the lake is closed until further notice. 6/18/2018 - ongoing

Total fire ban per Colfax Co Fire Marshall 1/16/2018 - ongoing
Effective March 13, 2018 there is a ban on open burning in the unincorporated areas of Colfax County. No outside smoking is permitted except within a 3-foot diameter barren area. The use of "exterior fireplaces, stoves, chimeneas, or charcoal briquette barbeques (except for gas-propane stoves and barbeques), and all open flames in the above designated areas of Colfax County are prohibited. Chainsaws will be permitted provided the manufacturers spark arrestor is in place. 5/25/2018 - ongoing
Cimarron Canyon State Park is closed through the 4th of July and until further notice. 6/12/2018 - ongoing

Stage 2 Fire Restrictions are in effect. Rio Arriba County Resolution 2018-061 Has been implemented prohibiting open fires within Rio Arriba County. These measures have been taken to protect the safety, health and property of citizens. Burning of the following types is prohibited: Open flame fires, Campfires, Trash/Rubbish, Crop Fields, Range Land, Natural Vegetation, Shrubbery. 5/15/2018 - ongoing

Elephant Butte Lake (575) 744-5923
Campfires and charcoal are prohibited in campgrounds. Exception granted where cooking, heating and lighting devices use kerosene, white gas or propane as a fuel in an improved camping sites cleared of vegetation for at least 30 feet, or has a water source. Propane or gas grills & campfires are allowed within 100 ft. of the shoreline down on the beach Smoking is prohibited except in enclosed RV’s or trailers, vehicles equipped with ashtrays, and on paved or surfaced roads. Stage I Fire Restrictions: Building, maintaining, attending or using a fire, campfire, charcoal, coal, or wood stove is prohibited except in State Park developed camp and picnic grounds where grills and stoves are provided by the State Park. The use of petroleum-fueled stoves, lanterns or heating devices is allowed, provided such devices meet the fire underwriter's specifications for safety. 7/13/2018 - 9/30/2018

Stage 2 Fire Restrictions are in effect. Rio Arriba County Resolution 2018-061 Has been implemented prohibiting open fires within Rio Arriba County. Hyde Memorial 505-983-7175
Fire restrictions are in place at Hyde Memorial State Park. Campfires, charcoal and other open flames are prohibited. Devices that use kerosene, white gas or propane as fuel are allowed, but must have a shut off switch. Smoking is prohibited except in enclosed RV's or trailers. Fireworks are always prohibited in all New Mexico State Parks. 7/10/2018 - ongoing

No fire grills or fire rings are available to the public at Living Desert Zoo and Gardens. Picnic tables and shelters are available for guests. 3/26/2018 - 12/31/2020

Manzano Mountains (505) 469-7608
Stage 2 fire restrictions are in place at Manzano Mountains State Park. Campfires, charcoal and other open flames are PROHIBITED. Pressurized kerosene, white gas or propane devices with a shut off switch are allowed. Smoking is prohibited except in enclosed RV's or trailers. Fireworks are always prohibited in all New Mexico State Parks. 7/14/2018 - ongoing

Morphy Lake State Park will close MONDAY, JUNE 4th at 8:00 a.m. due to extreme fire danger. The closure will remain in effect until further notice. The park closure will coincide with a full public-access closure of the Santa Fe National Forest. 6/4/2018 - ongoing
